Guth Gafa 2007 begins on Thursday 10th May and runs for 3 days until Sunday 13th in Gortahork, County Donegal. This is the second year of this unique documentary festival that takes place in this remote picturesque village in North-west Ireland, and it follows on from the success of last year’s first edition where 30 films from 15 different countries were screened.
Films confirmed for this year’s Festival include two multi-award winning US films. China Blue, a powerful and poignant journey into the harsh world of sweatshop workers in China, and New Year Baby, a deeply tender film about a Cambodian-American woman's journey with her family to uncover the secrets of a tragic past at the hands of the Khmer Rouge.
From Norway, we are showing Forever Yours, where a granddaughter follows a clue that makes her believe her grandfather, lost in the concentration camps of World War II, did not die. From Greece, comes Sugartown: The Bridegrooms, a wry and often hilarious look at a Greek village full of men who go in search of Russian brides, and from the UK we will show, Every Good Marriage Begins with Tears, a very funny film about the attempts of a UK Bangladeshi family to marry their daughters off in arranged marriages.
Alongside the wide selection of international documentary films, Guth Gafa will also screen a selection of some of the best Irish language films made in Ireland over the last few years, with a special focus on films made in and about Donegal.
All the international films screened at Guth Gafa 2007 will be Irish premieres and all the directors will be in attendance to take part in an in-depth post-screening discussion forum about their work. This was one of the highlights of the 2006 festival, as visiting filmmakers and local audiences had a chance to question filmmakers, like triple-Emmy award-winner, Alan Berliner, about his work.
Also at Guth Gafa 2007, there will be a Screen Training Ireland Masterclass and a Film Board-funded industry event about international theatrical and festival distribution of documentaries. Tutors and speakers for these events will be confirmed shortly.
