Radharc Trust Screenings

Guth Gafa documentary film festival is delighted to announce a partnership with the Radharc Trust for the second year for our 2008 festival. The Radharc Trust is co-funding, with the Irish Film Board, all of the post-screening discussions with international directors, and a member of the Radharc Trust will host a special screening from the Radharc archive of over 400 films.

This year, we are also associating the Radharc legacy of committed and ethical documentary film-making with Angels in The Dust, the story of a South African family who walked away from a privileged suburban life to build an extraordinary village and school that provides shelter, food, and education to more than 550 South African children most of them orphaned by AIDS. This film will be introduced by Peter Dunn of the Radharc Trust.

Times for these screenings are to be confirmed.

The Radharc Trust is an independent charitable organisation based in Ireland that promotes quality, integrity, awareness and professionalism in the media. The Trust is committed to the principles and values of listening and learning, respect, fairness and transparency.

The Radharc archive of over 400 documentary films produced on social and religious issues from a Christian perspective represents the endeavour of Ireland's first independent television production unit from the 1950s onwards. These films chronicled life and culture in Ireland and across the world, and often presented complex issues of social and political significance that challenged and undermined accepted thinking. In the early years of Irish broadcasting, Radharc became noted for its innovative approach both in terms of the subject matter and in its television treatment of areas and issues that were viewed as peripheral to society.

The aims of the Radharc Trust are threefold:

1. To facilitate serious public discussion on relevant media topics

The Radharc Trust works to provide a space for debate about the kind of media that we have, the kind of media that we want, and the kind of media that we deserve.

2. To facilitate professional media integrity

The Trust calls for and acknowledges outstanding achievement in media production in the Radharc tradition.

3. To facilitate media awareness education

Understanding how the media works is an important skill. Fair, balanced and accurate information is essential to empower real analysis. Particular attention is paid to primary and post-primary level media literacy education.
