September 2008 marks the 10th anniversary of the release of the first of 400 prisoners to be freed early from The Maze Prison/Long Kesh, following the signing of the Good Friday Agreement which was negotiated as part of the northern peace process. As much as any other event over the past 10 years, the release of these prisoners caused political stife, and pain, for the relatives of those who have suffered as a result of the ‘troubles’. 10 years on, Sunday at Five examines the lives of two individuals who played leading roles on opposite sides of the conflict.
Séanna Walsh is a former leader of the IRA in the H-Blocks who was freed as part of the early release programme, and Billy McQuiston is an ex-leader of the UDA. They portray a collective portrait of the penal perspective of the peace process, and their reflections help us to understand the complexity of the most recent decades of the conflict as seen from prison and on the outside.
